Fire damaged a section of the prestigious Westwood High School in Stewart Town, Trelawny late last night. It is understood that the blaze started in the kitchen at around 10 pm.

Three fire units from Falmouth, Brown’s Town and St Ann’s Bay battled the blaze which began in the kitchen. It eventually spread to the main dining hall and the store room. The matron’s quarters and a changing room were also destroyed.

There were no reports of injuries, but classes have been cancelled.

Westwood High was founded in 1882 and is one of the premier high school institutions for girls in Jamaica. It is consistently rated in the top 10 in GSAT passes each year and has students from all over the island as well as from overseas. More than half of the over 850 registered students are boarders.
