TRELAWNY CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED CELEBRATION
The Trelawny Co-Operative Credit Union Limited (TCCU) kicked off its 50th anniversary celebrations today. The commemoration began with a live broadcast by Mello FM in Water Square, outside the credit union location.
On 11 am Saturday, January 13, there will be a float parade starting at Jackson Town, then going on to Clark’s Town, then Duncans. It will end with a gospel concert in Water Square, Falmouth, starting at 5 pm.
On Sunday, January 14, there will be a Church service at the Clark’s Town New Testament Church of God, starting at 10 am.
HISTORY OF TRELAWNY CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED
Fifty years ago, the Long Pond Sugar Estate Credit Union started in Clark’s Town with 210 members which was comprised of sugar workers from the Trelawny estates. Back then, the total savings was $4000.
As a result of its expansion, in 1975 the Trelawny Estate Corporation Credit Union Limited was formed.
With further expansion, offices were sought in Falmouth, the parish capital. On March 29, 1977, the Trelawny Co-Operative Credit Union Limited began operations with only 2 employees.
TRELAWNY CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED TODAY
Today, the Trelawny Co-Operative Credit Union has grown from 210 members saving $4000 in 1968, to 33,294 members (as of writing) with savings of $1.7 billion.
The 2 employees that began in Falmouth in 1977 has grown to 35 today.
Assets in 1968 totaled $17000. Today, the credit union’s asset is $2.1 billion.
Loan to members was $9000 in 1968. Today, it is $1 billion.
TRELAWNY CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED LEADERSHIP
The phenomenol growth of the institution has been overseen by manager Winston Tomlinson. He has been a member of the Trelawny credit union for 40 years, and has been serving actively in various capacities for 37 years. These include stints as treasurer, delegate, President and Manager.
The Trelawny Co-Operative Credit Union Limited aims to continue its growth by inviting more persons to become members. They have made it easy with only $700 being the requirement to join the institution.
