Prime Minister Andrew Holness Tours Falmouth and Martha Brae Divisions

This evening, Prime Minister Andrew Holness toured sections of both Martha Brae and Falmouth Divisions. The Jamaica Labour Party made its intentions clear of trying to unseat two sitting Councillors of the People’s National Party, by bringing in the party leader.

JLP Seeks to Upset PNP

Both Falmouth and Martha Brae Divisions are solid PNP divisions, especially Falmouth. It is an extremely difficult task, but the JLP does not seem perturbed.

Fowler vs Wilkinson

For the JLP, newcomer Courtney “Colourman” Fowler will be challenging incumbent PNP Councillor and Mayor, Garth Wilkinson. In the Martha Brae Division, another JLP newcomer Wesley Nelson will be going up against his neighbour in Hague, another incumbent PNP Councillor, Philip Service.courtney-colourman-fowler-andrew-holness-crowd

To show how difficult it will be for Fowler, in the 2012 Elections, Garth Wilkinson with 1903 votes defeated the JLP’s Paul Campbell who could only pull in 231 votes. This was 89.18% votes for the PNP to only 10.82% for the JLP.

Division: Falmouth.
Garth Wilkinson – PNP – 1903 – (89.18%)
Paul Campbell – JLP – 231 – (10.82%)
Total Votes: 2134
Called for: Peoples National Party

Nelson Challenges Service

In the Martha Brae Division, the gap was also a big PNP victory, but not as lopsided as in the Falmouth Division. Wesley Nelson of the JLP will try to bridge the gap against the PNP’s Philip Service.

Division: Martha Brae.
Philip Service – PNP – 1190 – (60.47%)
Dave Lawkins – JLP – 768 – (39.02%)
Ras Black – IND – 10 – (0.51%)
Total Votes: 1968
Called for: Peoples National Party

What has changed?

A lot has changed in the Falmouth Division in 4 years. The JLP replaced Campbell, with Fowler. This is a man from the grassroots, who has resonated with the grassroots voters as well as the young. Another advantage for Fowler is the fact that the JLP is in power. There is usually a big swing to the party that won the General Elections. In the General Elections on February 25, 2016, there was already a swing to the JLP in the constituency.

The PNP that won by 2321 votes in North Trelawny in 2012, could only manage to win the constituency by 449 this year, February 2016. On the ground, there is no indication that the slide of the PNP has turned around.

Wilkinson has an impressive resume

Add to that Wilkinson’s perceived lack of performance, and we have an interesting scenario developing. I say perceived because Wilkinson has a decent resume. The development of Falmouth Town in the last 4 years has been under his tenure. He has a list of achievements to show for his four years.

Wilkinson has the huge advantage that Falmouth is a PNP town. Fowler would have to do the impossible and take a huge chunk of PNP votes to win.

Fowler Should Give Best JLP Performance In Decades

Whatever the outcome, Fowler looks set to give the JLP its best performance in the constituency in recent memory. Will it be enough to defeat Wilkinson? Quite unlikely, but don’t tell that to the fired up pro JLP voters in the division.courtney-colourman-fowler-andrew-holness-4

Interesting Battle

Time will tell, but one thing is for sure: this may be the most interesting election battle in the history of the Falmouth Division.

Local Government Election day is this Monday, November 28.
