The late Joe James was famous for his art and his art gallery and restaurant, which are located in Rio Bueno, Trelawny. Not so well known is the fact that he was the father of England’s famous former goalkeeper, David James.
Although there was no bad blood between them, both were not close. However, Joe James had a dying wish of reuniting with all his children.
The father of former Bristol City and England goalkeeper – David James – was unable to fulfil his dying wish of seeing all his children reunited before his death.
The dad of the famous goalie passed away at the age of 83 from bone cancer, but according to his wife Joy Burke he wanted all of his sons and daughters to reunite in Jamaica.
David James, who is starring in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, moved to England with his mum and brother when he was just a toddler, reports The Sunday People .
Now 49-years-old and a father of four himself, David is the second youngest of his eight brothers and sisters.
Mrs Burke, speaking from her home in in Rio Bueno, in the Trelawny district of the Caribbean island’s north coast, she said: “We were hoping to have a family reunion. Before Joe died we were planning it. We wanted to arrange all of the siblings to meet in America – but it didn’t happen.”
David was one of Britain’s most famous footballers with an army of fans when he played for top clubs.
His career was launched at Watford but he is best known for his seven years at Liverpool in the 1990s, during which he made 214 appearances. He played for several other big clubs including Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester City and earned £20million – but ended up bankrupt in 2014.
Joy said David did not go to the funeral for Joe, who is buried in a 16th-century island graveyard, but insisted there was no bad blood between the two.
And she said David, who is a keen artist and even illustrates children’s books, gets his talent from his dad.
