Jamaica finished second in the medals table of the 15th IAAF World Championships that ended today. The small Caribbean island of approximately 2.8 million, finished on 7 gold medals, the same as champions Kenya.
Ironically, Kenya’s capital Nairobi, with its 2009 population of 3.138 million, has more people than the entire island of Jamaica. Behind Jamaica in third place, is the mighty USA with a population of 318.9 million in 2014. That shows how remarkable the Jamaican achievement actually is.
In addition Jamaica also earned 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
The USA won in total medal haul with 18 medals followed by Kenya on 16. Jamaica was third on 12.
In terms of points (placing table) which shows the depth of the teams, the USA won on 214 points to Kenya’s 173 and Jamaica’s 132.
Jamaica won 3 out of 4 relays and 7 out of 14 sprint titles. It was therefore a successful championship for Jamaica with its best finish ever. Here are the medal winners for the green, gold and black:
