Today is one of the greatest days in Jamaica’s football (soccer) history as the Reggae Boyz take on overwhelming favourites Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015. The game will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jamaica time at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home field of the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Both teams had contrasting paths to the final. Jamaica upset giants USA 2-1 via two first half goals. There was no controversy there. However, Mexico defeated Panama 2-1 in a controversial game that had Panama crying robbery. Yesterday, we got news from CONCACAF that the referee admitted that he made bad decisions that could have affected the outcome of the game.
From RJR News:
The Reggae Boyz have a golden opportunity to rise to the top of CONCACAF and become recognised in world football, when they tackle 6-time champions Mexico on Sunday in the CONCACAF GOLD CUP FINAL 6:30p.m. Jamaica time at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Led by their mercurial head coach, Winfried Schaefer of Germany, the Reggae Boyz have moulded together, formed an immovable defensive force, and with deft midfielders Garath McLeary and Jobi McAnuff plus hardworkers JeVaughn Watson and captain Rodolph Austin, the Boyz will be tough to beat even against CONCACAF king pins Mexico.
The Mexicans have not been at their best since the world cup qualifying rounds for Brazil in 2013. Jamaica went to the famed Azteca Stadium and earned a 0-0 scoreline in world cup qualifying in 2013.
The defensive unit have epitomised what it means that ‘defence wins championships,’ as Michael Hector, Wes Morgan, Adrian Marriapa and Kemar “Taxi” Lawrence have been a force in the back field. The injured Jermaine Taylor was also telling until his torn quad ruled him out of action.
Strikers Darren Mattocks and Giles Morgan are now coming to the party.
For Mexico, injuries to Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez have ruled them out, but their inspirational captain Andres Guardado will be dangerous and must be accounted for.
So goes Winfried Schaefer, goeth the Reggae Boyz, as the team has morphed into the coach’s personality.
The match can be seen LIVE on TVJSN and TVJ starting with a pregame show at 6p.m. with Analyst Andrew Pryce, a former national defender and head coach of Boys’ Town, while our own Damion Gordon will be reporting LIVE from Philadelphia. Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell will provide expert commentary.
In the 3rd place playoff on Saturday, Panama defeated United States 3-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 regulation and extra time draw.
